BCL Finalizes Deal To Finance ‘Roe v. Wade’ Movie
“Roe v. Wade,” a new politically-charged drama, has completed its financing process thanks to a deal with BCL Finance Group. The financial team, lead by Adi Cohen, Michael Bassick and Michael Laundon, adds “Roe v. Wade” to an ever-increasing slate of high-profile projects.
BCL Finance announced the deal on Tuesday and the news couldn’t come at a more relevant time. This week the U.S. Senate is set to begin confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Abortion and female productive rights are likely to take center stage during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings.
“Roe v. Wade” completed filming in July and BCL is preparing for a wide release in the U.S. this winter. Based on a true story, “Roe v. Wade” examines the dueling perspectives surrounding a controversial 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision. Under the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment, women were afforded a right to privacy in there decision on whether to have an abortion. More than 40 years later, the landmark decision continues to be a hot-button issue for many Americans.
The star-studded film will feature acting performances from Jon Voight, Robert Davi, Stacey Dash, Jamie Kennedy, Joey Lawrence, Greer Grammar, Steve Guttenberg, Tomi Lahren and others. A number of the cast members are known to carry conservative views on reproductive rights. This plays into Cathy Allyn and Nick Loeb’s vision for the film as a conduit for both sides of the abortion argument.
Allyn and Loeb wrote, directed and produced the film in the United States, filming mainly in Louisiana. Loeb will also make an appearance on screen as Bernard Nathanson, a gynecologist who helped start an abortion rights organization called NARAL.
Executive Producer Alveda King, Martin Luther King’s niece, has stated in an interview with Fox News that she hopes the film will be educational. She endeavors to provide audiences with the facts so that they may draw their own conclusions.
While the film has BCL’s full support, the New York-based company wanted to make clear that they do not take a political or activist stance in regards to the projects they decide to finance.
BCL Finance Group has made a number of deals over the past few years. The company finalized a deal last year to co-produce “The Last Measure,” a Vietnam drama from writer-director Todd Robinson. Jeremy Irvine will star in the film.
BCL’s head honchos are involved in a number of film projects beyond “Roe v. Wade.” “Under The Silver Lake,” “Snowden,” and “American Made” are just a few of Michael Bassick’s film credits. Adi Cohen’s projects include “Shore Leave” and “The Last Full Measure.” Michael Laundon co-founded World of Books, an online retailer. He’s backed “Tell Me Why I Don’t Like Mondays” for nearly two decades and is currently involved in production on the documentary “Shore Leave.”
