The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a new hero with the launch of Black Panther in 2018. Starring Marvel’s first black lead, it’s high on the list of highly anticipated new movies for the coming year. Despite still being months out from release, Marvel has begun the hype train by release a new movie trailer following Thor: Ragnarok as well as new movie behind the scenes footage.
This new movie behind the scenes footage gives us a glimpse into the thought processes that went behind the creation of a superhero film set in Africa with a primarily black cast. Heroic lead Chadwick Boseman has discussed his decision to use a non-European accent as a message statement and a way to authentically represent his homeland as a place untouched by European imperialism. While the Black Panther, also known as T’Challa, was first introduced in Captain America: Civil War, director Ryan Coogler is looking to build a unique and sci-fi inspired setting for the hero to play in. As revealed in the new movie trailer, T’Challa will drawn from uniquely afro-futurist designs to properly portray the hidden African utopia of Wakanda from which T’Challa hails.
But fans are even more curious about how Black Panther will tie into the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and other new movies coming down the pipeline. Marvel has always been notoriously tight-lipped, but footage from the Black Panther trailer suggest that Wakanda is in possession of an Infinity Stone, one of the relics that the main villain Thanos is in search of. Along with massive war scenes in the Infinity War trailer that seem to take place in Wakanda, we can expect this new hero to play a critical role in both the immediate and long-term future of Marvel’s cinematic endeavors.
Black Panther is hitting theaters on February 16.
