“All the Money in the World”
“All the Money in the World” is a crime drama directed by Ridley Scott. It is among the new movies released on December 8, 2017.
This new movie behind the scenes look at the real life story of John Paul Getty III (played here by Charlie Plummer), the grandson of the famous oil tycoon J. Paul Getty (played by Kevin Spacey), who was abducted on July 10, 1973, when he was sixteen years old. He was kept hostage for ransom until December 15 of the same year. His captors were members of the ‘Ndrangheta, a group similar to the Sicilian Mafia which operates mainly in Calabria, Italy.
The main character of the film is the younger Getty’s mother, Abigail Getty, née Harris (played by Michelle Williams). In the new movie trailer, we see her receive a phone call from the ‘Ndrangheta captors, who demand $17 million dollars for her son’s release. She objects that she doesn’t have the money.
“Get it from your father-in law,” the captor says dismissively. “He has all the money in the world.”
Unfortunately, the elder Getty is notoriously frugal, not to mention prideful, and refuses to pay the ransom, nor will he accept a cheaper one. As the trailer hints, this had serious repercussions for his grandson in real life: though he was eventually released, he got away with a rather serious wound.
Mark Wahlberg plays Fletcher Chase, Getty’s adviser who becomes Abigail’s ally in trying to convince the elder Getty to negotiate. Timothy Hutton also appears as Getty’s attorney, while child actor Charlie Shotwell plays the John Pau in flashback scenes.
